Brüderle: Ict Project Opens Up Opportunities For The Visually Impaired In Education And Employment

As part of the largest trade fair for the blind and visually impaired aids in Germany, SightCity in Frankfurt / Main, the partners presented by the Federal Ministry of Economics and Technology (BMWi) funded project Hyperbraille a touch-sensitive display surface. It offers blind and visually impaired people the first opportunity to record with his hands graphical computer applications and control. Thus, for example text, tables, sketches, space plans or ways to tactile Braille displays points of a surface imaged.

Federal Minister Brüderle: "I am delighted that it is medium-sized companies have succeeded together with partners from academia, to develop a new technology for blind and visually impaired makes it easier for interested parties using computers and gives them new opportunities in education and the technology is Hyperbraille.. an important component under the National Action Plan of the Federal Government to implement the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities. Based on the successful project is announced for the end of 2011, the implementation of the display area into a production-ready product. Besides the display of the innovation Hyperbraille lies in the software to control the display to map graphic elements on Braille dots, and the interaction between users and computer applications, such as a spreadsheet.

The development of appropriate user interface has been systematically targeted to specific PC applications, especially from the office area, and verified by extensive user testing on usage and acceptance. A design study was also evidence of ergonomic requirements that are included in the design of the display.

On the technology project launched in 2007 following partners were involved: Metec AG, FH Pape Meier GmbH & Co. KG, IMS-Chips, TU Dresden and the University of Potsdam. With a project budget of approximately € 10 million, the project was proportionately receive around € 5 million from the BMWi.
